Entrepreneur urges young business people to get ‘jamming’ with ideas

first_imgMulti-award winning young entrepreneur Fraser Doherty, whose grandparents hail from Donegal, has urged young people aged 18-35 in the county to enter this year’s competition for Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur and to learn from the experience. The 28 year-old from Edinburgh was in Letterkenny to speak at the ‘Jam Packed’ business networking event organised by Local Enterprise Office, Donegal. And he insisted that young people in business should embrace the competition rather than fear it. “Television shows like The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den make people think that business can be really ruthless, but actually people are very happy to help you and give you advice, so I would suggest to young people to try to take as much of that as they can get.”The young entrepreneur started his business Superjam aged just 16, having been taught how to make jam by his grandmother Susan who was originally an O’Brien from Listillion. He had made his first million before the age of 20.Since then his jam has gone on sale in more than 7 countries, his product range has expanded to include honey and peanut butter and as well as writing several books he also owns the companies Beer 52 and Envelope Coffee. However, he is adamant that he could have never have been successful without taking on the advice that people gave him from the outset – and continue to give him. Jam Packed 12Members attending the Jam Packed business networking event in Rockhill House pictured in The Orangerie before Fraser Doherty’s talk.“I started making jam at home as a hobby then started selling it door to door in the neighbourhood and at farmers’ markets and small shops then it became my dream to sell it to a big supermarket. I had to convince my dad to drive me to Waitrose and he waited in the car outside. I went in and pitched to Waitrose but at first they said no. They gave me some feedback and I listened to that and I went away and made some changes and eventually they took it on.”Instead of anger at the rejection, Fraser says that he went away from that meeting with Waitrose determined to make the changes that would make his business a success. He maintains the advice from pitching to companies with his product and from entering business competitions, has helped him grow his business immensely.“I would say to young people in Donegal, don’t be afraid to enter a competition, because it is a great way to get advice from people who might give you feedback about your idea. If you listen to those people, if you take that advice on board and are open to making changes to your idea – that is the best way of coming up with something that might be a success.“I think it is also important to take opportunities to meet other entrepreneurs. Sometimes if you are a young person in business or who has a good idea and are just trying to start a business and maybe your friends aren’t doing that, it can be a lonely thing. But if you take part in the competition it will be a great chance to meet other young entrepreneurs and maybe meet some friends and help each other out along the way.” Head of Enterprise in Donegal, Michael Tunney, said that feedback year on year from businesses who have taken part in the competition for Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur in Donegal, has been that the training and advice they received has been invaluable and has helped them immensely with their business goals and ambitions.Mary Sweeney and Irene Sweeney enjoying the presentation from Fraser Doherty at the Jam Packed business networking day in Rockhill House organised by Local Enterprise Office, Donegal.“The idea category is open to anyone 18-35 who feels they have a great business idea. They don’t need to be in business, just to have a great business idea and it is always exciting to see those entries come in. However, if you are 18-35 and have already taken the brave step of going into business – no matter what that business might be – then you should really consider applying in the Best Start Up (trading less than 18 months) or Best Established (trading more than 18 months) categories.”Local winners in the Best Start-Up and Best Established Business categories will receive investments of up to €15,000 each and the two runners-up will each receive up to €5,000.Applications for this year’s competition can be made online by Friday 29 September at www.ibye.ie but anyone seeking more information before submitting their application can call Donegal Local Enterprise Office: 07491 60735 or e.mail info@leo.donegalcoco.ie Entrepreneur urges young business people to get ‘jamming’ with ideas was last modified: September 16th, 2017 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:BusinessFrazer DohertyjamLEO< Donegallast_img read more

Kyle Korver Is On Pace For The Best NBA Shooting Season Of

Mark Price1988-8999979562.3 Dirk Nowitzki2006-0794909560.5 Larry Bird1987-8899899860.8 Kyle Korver2014-1597th100th97th73.1% PLAYERSEASONFG%3PT%FT%TS% In the NBA, the apex of individual shooting is a 50-40-90 season — shooting 50 percent from the field, 40 percent on 3-pointers and 90 percent on free throws. Not many people can sustain that kind of accuracy from inside and out. Since the three-point line was adopted for the 1979-80 campaign, just six players (in 10 seasons overall) have hit 50-40-90 on their percentages.1For the achievement to qualify, a player needs to have made 300 field goals, 55 3-pointers and 125 free throws in one season.Kyle Korver is doing his best to become the 11th. There are a handful of players within striking distance of 50-40-90, but only Korver, the Atlanta Hawks’ All-Star shooting guard, is on pace to achieve it. Korver is operating on a different plane of existence right now — shooting 51.2 percent from the field, 52.3 percent on 3-pointers and 91.1 percent from the free-throw line. He could have the first-ever 50-50-90 season.Since the 1979-80 season, 1,184 player seasons have met the minimum benchmarks, and the overlap between their shooting percentages emphasizes just how rare the achievement is that Korver is chasing.Korver’s performance so far became more astonishing the more I looked at the numbers. If we include him in those 1,184 player seasons (he hasn’t met the minimum benchmarks but is on pace to,2But just barely for free throws. Korver is on pace to make 125 free throws, and 125 is the cut. barring injury), his percentages this season would rank in the 97th percentile in both field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage. His 3-point percentage would be the best of any player in the sample. If we compare those percentile ranks with the other 50-40-90 seasons, along with True Shooting Percentage, Korver has a legitimate claim to the greatest shooting season of all time. Reggie Miller1993-9495919663.6 But can Korver keep this up for the rest of the season? What we know about players regressing to the mean suggests probably not. But we’re more than halfway through the season, and the possible variability in his end-of-season percentages is reduced with each shot he takes. In Korver’s case, nothing’s guaranteed — yet.The chart below shows, for each season, how many percentage points Korver’s final field-goal percentage differed from the percentage he was shooting at other points in the season.3I used percentage of total shot attempts to track his progress rather than games played. Steve Nash2009-1096939961.5 Steve Nash2008-0995969961.5 Steve Nash2005-0697969863.2 Kevin Durant2012-1397909664.7 Larry Bird1986-8789989361.2 Steve Nash2007-0895999664.1 If we assume Korver will play the rest of the season, attempting field goals, free throws and 3-pointers at the same rate as he has to this point, then he has just passed the 65 percent mark. Going by the trend line, we would expect his current field-goal percentage to vary from his final mark by about 1.3 percentage points. Shooting exactly 51.2 percent from the field at this point, hitting 50 percent from the field does not seem secure.Using the same technique to look at his free-throw shooting yields a similarly murky projection.By the trend line, we would expect Korver’s current free-throw percentage to vary by as much as 2.3 percentage points from his final tally. Because he’s shooting 91.1 percent from the line, he could easily fall below the 90 percent threshold. Korver typically attempts far fewer free throws than shots from the field, this season included, and thus there is a lot more variability throughout the season.Interestingly, the mark that seems most secure — his 52.3 percent shooting on 3-pointers — could be his undoing. Here is the same chart for his 3-point percentage. It’s unlikely that Korver’s 3-point percentage would drop 12.3 percentage points, to dip below 40 percent, by the end of the year. But his field-goal shooting is highly dependent on his 3-point shooting — 72.7 percent of Korver’s shot attempts this season have been 3-pointers. He has made just 55 of his 114 shots inside of the arc — 48.2 percent. We should potentially expect more variation in his field-goal percentage than the chart above indicates. If Korver’s 3-point percentage declined by 2.3 percentage points by the end of the season, it would dip below 50 percent; his overall field-goal percentage would drop by 1.6 percentage points, also sliding below 50 percent. If Korver is going to finish the year with a field-goal percentage above 50 percent, he’ll probably need the cushion of keeping his 3-point percentage above 50 percent as well.Korver is chasing history and walking a tightrope. He has put up a half-season’s worth of shooting efficiency that can stand against anything in the record books. But if 50-40-90 is the goal, it’s not time to exhale quite yet. read more

(AP Photo/Nick Wass, File)Officers responding to a report of a crash in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale followed a fluid trail to a grocery store parking lot where they found Suggs’ BMW sedan with fresh damage.Suggs was not impaired and told officers he possibly fell asleep before the crash, police Sgt. Ben Hoster said.He was released after being arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license, Hoster said.“Terrell alerted us early this morning about the situation and we are looking into it,” Ravens Senior Vice President of Public & Community Relations Kevin Byrne said.Suggs’ representative at EAG Sports Management, Denise White, issued a statement that read in part: “Police were called and upon speaking to Terrell found his license to be suspended for speeding tickets. … Terrell will let the judicial process take its course and fix his license issues.”The 33-year-old Suggs is a six-time Pro Bowl linebacker and a lynchpin of the Ravens defense. He tore his Achilles tendon in the 2015 opener at Denver and missed the rest of the year.Although Suggs has kept a low profile since the injury, general manager Ozzie Newsome expects the linebacker back in 2016.“In my last conversation with him, his answer to me was, ‘I don’t want to leave the game the way I left it out in Denver.’ So, I think he is using that as motivation,” Newsome said in January. “I’m just looking forward to him getting back in here when he does, being involved in the OTAs, going through training camp and just seeing where he is.”Suggs is the franchise career leader with 106 ½ sacks and was The Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year in 2011, when he recorded a career-high 14 sacks and led the league with seven forced fumbles. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Suggs played college football at Arizona State before Baltimore drafted him as the 10th overall pick in 2003.After Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis retired following the 2012 season, Suggs stepped up to assume leadership of a defense that perennially is among the best in the NFL. Suggs has led Baltimore in sacks in seven of his 13 seasons. On the practice field and in the locker room, he keeps the mood light by joking with his teammates. On Sundays, when not chasing the quarterback, he’s constantly chatting with the officials and opposing players.last_img read more

Microsoft releases Windows 10 Insider build 17682

first_imgMicrosoft announced today that they are releasing Windows 10 Insider build 17682 from the RS5 branch today. The new release includes sets improvements, wireless projection experience, Microsoft Edge improvements, and RSAT along with other updates and fixes. Major improvements and updates Sets Improvements New tab page has been updated which makes it easy to launch apps. On clicking the plus button in a Sets window, apps are visible in the frequent destinations list. The all apps list have been integrated into the new tab page to make it easy to browse apps instead of using the search box. Apps supporting Sets when clicked will launch into a new tab. In case you select News Feed, just select the “Apps” link which is next to “News Feed”, this will help switch to the all apps list. Managing Wireless Projection Experience Earlier, there were disturbances during wireless projection for users when the session was started through file explorer or an app. This has been fixed now with Windows 10 Insider build 17682 as there’ll be a control banner at the top of a screen during a session. The control banner informs you about your connection state, lets you tune the connection as well as helps with quick disconnect or reconnect to the same sink. Tuning is done with the help of settings gear. Screen to screen latency is optimized based on the following scenarios: Game mode makes gaming over a wireless connection possible by minimizing screen to screen latency. Video mode ensures smooth playback of the videos without any glitches on the big screen by increasing screen to screen latency. Productivity mode helps to balance between game mode and video mode. Screen to screen latency is responsive enough so that typing feels natural while ensuring limited glitch in the videos. All connections start off in the productivity mode. Improvements in Microsoft Edge for developers With the latest Windows 10 insider build 17682, there is unprefixed support for the new Web Authentication API (WebAuthN). Web Authentication helps provide a scalable and interoperable solution. It helps with replacing passwords with stronger hardware-bound credentials. Microsoft Edge users can use Windows Hello (via PIN or biometrics). They can also use other external authenticators namely FIDO2 Security Keys or FIDO U2F Security Keys. This helps authenticate the websites securely. RSAT available on demand No need to manually download RSAT on every upgrade. Select the “Manage Optional features” in Settings. Then click on “Add a feature” option which will provide you with all the listed RSAT components. You can pick the components you want, and on next upgrade, Windows will ensure that all those components automatically persist the upgrade. More information about other known issues and improvements is on the Window’s Blog.
