WICB says Antigua now permanent home for regional cricket

first_imgWest Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron says Antigua and Barbuda will be the permanent home of cricket in the Caribbean. West Indies cricket teams, at all levels, will meet there for training ahead of competitions. The WICB says that this makes sense since the body is already headquartered on the island. WICB marketing & communications manager, Carole Beckford, says that the new arrangement was made possible because of the relationship between the board and the Antiguan government. “All of the developmental infrastructure, the high performance centre, the centre of training – all of that facility will be in Antigua,” she says. “It was brought about by the arrangement we have with Antigua with regards to the former Stanford Cricket Ground – also known as ‘Sticky Wicket’. The government of Antigua and the West Indies Cricket Board have a Memorandum of Understanding and a relationship to occupy that property.” Beckford told The Gleaner that the remodelling of the cricket field is currently under way and other facilities such as the restaurant and the athletic club, will be built up over the next three years. Cameron says that this will follow the work the board has done to increase its full time staff to 300. This includes players (both men and women), administrators and umpires on retainer contracts. He added that this means that Jamaica has a lot more to do in order to not fall behind Antigua and the rest of the region with regard to cricket. “The rest of the region has engaged cricket much more than Jamaica,” he says. He would add that this is also why Jamaica has not been granted many Test matches by the WICB recently. This is because Sabina Park, which he describes as the “major cricket stadium”, is in Kingston. “I was recently asked why we aren’t seeing more Test matches in the island [Jamaica],” the president said. “Maybe one of the reasons is that our major cricket stadium is in the city. Some of us don’t see the city as a tourist destination. The other islands are not that big so all the stadiums are on the sea, basically. When we go to the governments in the region, they’re all begging (for) West Indies cricket, except Jamaica and that is a reality.” Cameron says the WICB facilitates negotiations with whichever government contacts it, as it is running a business. This business, he says, will bring more people and jobs to each Caribbean territory as he said the WICB is running what he describes as a sports industry in cricket.last_img read more

Gov’t Seeks Funding for Lofa Road Maintenance

first_imgDeputy Public Works Minister Claude Langley has disclosed that government is scouting for money for the maintenance of the Gbarnga to Voinjama road in Lofa County.Mr. Langley told a recent news conference that the road, which is currently in good shape despite the rainy season, needs to be maintained. The road was rehabilitated by Westwood Corporation, a Liberian firm. The Gbarnga to Voinjama Highway, according to several officials who recently traveled to Lofa with President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, is so far the best in rural Liberia. The road is better for the first time in the last four years, since the celebration of Liberia’s Independence in Lofa County in 2010.Some independent journalists who travelled with President Johnson-Sirleaf to Lofa recently, said motorbikes (pen-pen), taxis and buses are currently engaged in serious transportation business because of the good condition of the road. Some residents of the county told our reporter that since the civil conflict, this is the first time Lofa has experienced low transport fares. This, they noted, is because of the good road network in the county.Mr. Pewu Kollie, a resident of Zorzor, said prior to the rehabilitation of the road, commuters used to pay about L$4,500 per trip, “but now we are paying about L$3,000 from Voinjama to Monrovia. He described the drop in the transport fare as a great financial relief for the people of Lofa County and said “We want to thank the company for doing such a wonderful job.”“My brother, some companies will take the money and do a bad job, to the detriment of locals who have to face great difficulty traveling on bad roads, especially during the rainy season,” he said. Also speaking, Tenneh Baysah, a business woman in Voinjama, said “We used to travel with water, buckets, cook spoons and pots for cooking because we would spend more than a day on this road. But today it takes a few hours, not days or a week from Monrovia to Voinjama.”“Goods, especially vegetables and other perishable commodities, are no longer getting rotten as before due to the number of days we would spend on the road, businesswoman Baysah said.According to our reporter, instead of days or a week, it now takes a maximum of five hours from Voinjama to Gbarnga, depending on the type of vehicle. The volume of traffic along the route has increased significantly, thus boosting economic activities and reducing prices, our reporter said. However, Deputy Minister Langley has given the assurance that government will attract funding to keep the road intact. He attributed the deplorable road network in other parts of the country, especially in the southeast, to the lack of maintenance.According to him, the Ministry of Public Works lacks the necessary equipment to maintain roads across the country and was looking for funding to ensure that roads built or rehabilitated by contractors remain intact.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgThe Commissioner-designate and Members of the Board of Directors-designate of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), Thursday, May 22, faced the Senate Committee on Ways, Means, Finance and Budget for confirmation hearings, and unveiled 11 strategic principles they wish to apply that will increase revenues.Commissioner-designate, Madam Elfreda Stewart Tamba and the three members of the Board of Directors headed by Cllr. Robert C. Tubman, and Messrs Charles R. Bright, Oliver N. Rogers and Mrs. Aletha Brown Cooper, in a power-point presentation noted that the LRA strategy will concentrate in the areas such as engaging in comprehensive investment in the Authority; efficient organization structure, staffing and accommodations, while streamlined collection systems and procedures are some of the strategic principles that will come into force under debut management team.Madam Tamba informed the Sumo Kupee-led 15-member committee that another area the LRA will focus on is taxpayers’ compliance, which she said needs motivation, while at the same time launch an entrenched risk management and revenue protection program. The LRA, according to Commissioner-designate Tamba, will also expand tax base and lower compliance burden of taxpayers. For his part, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Cllr Tubman, assured the Senators that he and other members of the board will ensure that every single item highlighted in the presentation is implemented to the letter, saying that as an economist with high degree of efficiency, and also a career lawyer, he will not be associated with a team that is marked for failure.Dismissing the nominees following over two hours of grilling, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kupee thanked them of their brilliant presentations and assured them that members of the committee will make a report to the plenary, and that further decisions will be made by that body. The Deputy Commissioner General for Operation/Technical Affairs-designated is Mrs. Dekontee King Sackie, while other members of the board include the Ministry of Finance & Ministry of Justice as Statutory members; Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and Commissioner-General of LRA all as statutory members.Meanwhile, noticed among the staff and others in attendance at the hearing was former Standard Bearer of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in the November 2011 Presidential and General Elections, Cllr. A Positive Character in Culture

first_imgClassical Liberian artwork was again over the weekend seen in a unique display at the 10th Biannual US Embassy Art and Craft Fair in Monrovia. The occasion was an amazing one for participants to see how beautiful the Liberian Culture can be when explored through Art.To some of the art dealers, like Mr. Thomas, it was just the beginning of another market opportunity created by the US Embassy for artistic Liberians to get involved in marketing their work. The fair brought together more than 100 Arts and Crafts vendors from across Monrovia, with different religions, political and socio-economic backgrounds into total unity. The fair was a well-organized event with the sale of hand made cups made from coconut shell, garments, toy bamboo houses and cars. There was also hipster and shoulder bags made from African fabric, cow bone jewelry; carved wooden chests, chairs and the traditional devil masks. In addition, there were woven baskets made from fabric, beaded jewelry made from recycled glass and flowerpots. Hand-made quilts and paintings that detail life in Liberia were also added.Shelia Paskam, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy said,“We believe that in order for the Liberian economy to grow, we have to promote Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). This is a business and culture fair for Liberian artists,” she added. She stated further that the art at the fair is the creative expression of men and women who spent a lot of time in perfecting their artwork.“The US Embassy in Monrovia remains grateful to be part of the process of helping to maintain the culture tradition of Liberia,” she added.Though many onlookers thought the cost of some art items appeared too costly, foreigners largely purchased most of the artwork.James Budu Prowd, a physically challenged artist who specializes in the making of Liberian slippers and baboon house thought,”The fair helped us to express our creativity as artists and market our artifacts to generate revenue for our businesses,” he said.Jenney Fayia, a 17-year-old who also showcased her artistic works agreed with James.“We get connection as artists from such an event and learn from each other’s talent in improving our own creativity. I hope our government could host many fair like this one in the near future,” she added. Also present was Wytchen Barrolle, the marketing supervisor at the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism. She said that the US Embassy annual fair is a reminder to the Liberian Government to hold such events.“Its our duty to promote these fairs for our own culture and not leaving it with other people to take on our responsibility. Ordinary Liberians are ignorant to these exhibitions and therefore, they don’t turnout to support their own art fairs,” she added. Also at the fair was Mr. Fato Wheremonger, a vendor representative.“We as Liberian artists need our own cultural village and when this is done, it will increase opportunity for tourism in Liberia,” he added.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Child neglect highest reported form of abuse – CCPA

first_imgThe Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA) received 4917 reports of child abuse in 2018, with neglect accounting for the majority of those cases. Many parents, due to a busy schedule or other reasons, fail to give their child the attention he or she deserves, which takes a toll on that child without some parents even noticing.According to the Child Care Department, some 2431 cases of child neglect were recorded last year. In trying to reach out to the public on this matter, the CCPA recently posted on its social media page that the most effective strategy there is when it comes to parents preventing child abuse is communication.“Parents need to talk to their children every day to learn as much as they can about their child’s daily activities [such as] their feelings, concerns or problems. Adults must listen to their children with open minds [and] they must not be judgemental or keep interrupting the child’s flow as he or she speaks,” the agency stated. It further noted that at an appropriate time, parents can feel free to ask questions or simply ask the child about anything which may have raised a red flag during the conversation.CCPA Director Ann GreeneThe CCPA said that children will not speak openly with adults if they feel that they will either get into trouble or upset their parent in some way. It also noted that if a child feels that the adult is not really concerned about him or her and only pretends to be listening, eventually the child will desist from sharing their feelings. The Ministry of the Presidency had said, “According to the statistics, 60 per cent of child neglect occurs when a child is between the ages of 4-13 years old, while 83 per cent of child sexual abuse occurs when a child is between the ages of 8-18 years old”.But Director of the CCPA, Ann Greene is of the view that this number is far less than the actual statistics since abuse is a “hidden crime”.“Child abuse is a hidden crime and, particularly, sexual abuse is behind closed doors and some of the victims, they literally do not have a voice to report abuse, meaning many children are being abused and they can’t report. So even if we do get a report, that’s the tip of the iceberg,” Greene was quoted as saying.last_img read more

Forget Cardiff, warns Zidane as Real face ‘complete’ Juventus

first_img“It will be a totally different scenario,” Zidane told a press conference in Turin on Monday.“Ten months have elapsed and tomorrow’s match will have nothing to do with that.“The players are more or less the same but since then our season has not been as good as we expected it to be.“Juventus have been having a great season.”Real Madrid are trailing Barcelona by 13 points in La Liga while Juventus are top of Serie A and in the running for a treble.“Juventus are doing great things and playing beautiful football, it is a complete team,” continued Zidane.“We have to pay attention to everything, their defensive strength and talent of (Paulo) Dybala and (Gonzalo) Higuain up front and their midfield.”Zidane said that there were lots of similarities between the two European giants.“I believe that we are quite similar in our hopes, expectations. These two teams share the same DNA, two teams that fight hard and want to win everything.”Zidane returns to Juventus where he spent five years between 1996 and 2001 as a player before moving to Real Madrid.“I learned a lot as a player and as a person. I left France for the first time, it was a radical change and Juventus welcomed me like a family. I have good memories.”And the former France international said he would not rule out a return to Turin as coach.“Never say never,” he said. “I’m very happy with what I have. I’m very focused on what I’m doing. I don’t really want to think too much about the future.“I live day by day, that’s life, because life is particularly complicated if you coach a team like Real Madrid.”– ‘Important lesson’ –Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said his side had learned valuable lessons from their second final defeat in three seasons last May, and were looking to pull off a shock by eliminating the favourites.“The Cardiff match was a very important lesson. We had a very good first half, but mentally we suffered, we gave it up a bit,” he said.“Especially (as) this is a two-legged clash it cannot happen again. It’s important to stay focused and stay in the match the whole time.“Real are a tricky team. They can be almost sleepy at the beginning but can then hurt us.“We’re up against a team that have been playing the Champions League without interruption since 1997 and are always at least in the semi-finals since 2011.“We know that we’re up against the strongest and the favourites, eliminating such a team would be a step forward and an exploit.”Defender Giorgio Chiellini added that Juventus did not see the match as a chance for revenge, as the seven-time runners-up bid for a third title after 1985 and 1996.“No revenge, because over many years of playing we have had positive and negative memories against everyone,” said Chiellini.“If you want to reach the final stages of the Champions League you have to play the big clubs, we also have good memories, even if we have bad memories of Cardiff.“There’s respect and esteem, but that doesn’t mean we can’t beat them.”0Shares0000(Visited 2 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane warned his side not to underestimate Juventus © AFP / JAVIER SORIANOTURIN, Italy, Apr 2 – Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has warned that last year’s final win over Juventus in Cardiff will count for little in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against the Italians in Turin.Real Madrid lifted their 12th Champions League crown — and second under Zidane — with a 4-1 win last May, but the Frenchman insisted “ten months ago was a completely different situation”.last_img read more

DD Gardening: Time to get checking for sawflies

first_imgGooseberry Sawfly is the number one problem for anyone growing Gooseberries here in Donegal. A full plant can be severely defoliated in a few weeks if these hungry little chaps are left unchecked. The caterpillar like larvae from the Female Sawfly are active from early May here in Donegal, after hatching low down on the plant the larvae then munch their way happy, growing rapidly in size and with it their appetite growing hugely too! Advertisement The first step is to regularly inspect your Gooseberry plants for the early signs of larvae feeding, at this stage the small larvae can be squished or picked off before much damage has been done – the spanner in the works here is the sheer volume of thorns on the Gooseberry plants… which makes thorough inspection of the foliage difficult. If you miss them early you’ll soon notice the damage they cause, but as they get bigger the removal will be a bit easier. It is important that you do remove or control these larvae as in one season you can have multiple generations on the same plant, so regular inspection on a weekly basis is advised. If picking and squishing isn’t your thing then look out for some Pyrethrum contact Insecticide, use this natural (but potent) insecticide to kill the larvae on contact. Advertisement Prevention of Sawfly occurrence is a multi-pronged approach, firstly you have to look at pruning and opening up the crown of your plants to improve air flow, reducing the cover available for newly emerging larvae. Next you can use a winter wash on your plants to remove any overwintering eggs.Lastly to prevent the adult female sawfly from laying eggs on your plants you can use a Garlic based spray as a deterrent.Although not fatal in itself sever attack by Sawfly will weaken the Gooseberry and reduce fruit size and overall yield. However if attack is regularly suffered over a number of seasons the plant may be severely weakened.Fresh gooseberries are such a delightful crop that it’s a shame to give up on your plants just because you’ve been struck with Sawfly damage in the past!DD Gardening: Time to get checking for sawflies was last modified: May 22nd, 2017 by Gareth AustinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:GardeningGareth Austingooseberrysawflieslast_img read more

Claudio Ranieri says he is ‘terribly shaken’ by Leicester chairman’s death

first_imgFormer Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has said he is ‘terribly shaken’ by the tragic death of chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. The Premier League title-winning boss has spoken of his sadness at the heart-breaking passing of the Thai billionaire, who he described as ‘a good man’ and ‘a positive person who was full of energy’. 4 4 “I was terribly shaken by the news,” the Italian coach told Sky Sports Italia.“He was a good man and always had a positive word for everyone. His positivity and ability to make everybody love him was clear for all to see. He came into the dressing room only to dispense kind words, never to reproach you.“One time soon after my birthday, he arrived in the dressing room with a huge cake and made everyone sing ‘Happy Birthday.’“He was an illuminated man and everything he touched became better. “Now it’s up to his son, who has always been in love with football, to carry on in his father’s footsteps.“I remember when we first met that I immediately thought he was a positive person, full of energy. My objective when I arrived at Leicester was to secure Premier League safety, then we all know what happened.“Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha made a very important contribution to the Premier League victory, as he’d arrive 30 minutes before the game to embrace everyone. He never said a word out of turn, was always happy with a smile on his face.“I am so sad right now, I want to join the family in their grief.” Vichai and son Aiyawatt hand the Premier League title to Claudio Ranieri as Leicester are crowned English champions in 2016 Club owner Srivaddhanaprabha was one of five people who lost their lives in a tragic helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium following the Foxes’ 1-1 draw with West Ham on Saturday.Leicester’s home ground has become a memorial for the 60-year-old in the three days since the accident, with thousands of flowers, cards, shirts and scarfs being laid by supporters. On Monday, son and vice chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha was joined by his mother, Aimon, at the stadium as they laid a wreath during an emotional morning, which also saw Leicester players join the mourners. And Ranieri has said he “joins the family in grief” after the loss of a man who gave him the Leicester job in 2015 and celebrated winning the Premier League alongside him ten months later.center_img Ranieri has said he “joins the family in grief” after the tragic death of Khun Vichai Ranieri and Srivaddhanaprabha appeared to enjoy a fond relationship at Leicester Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha: 1958-2018 4 4last_img read more

BJP not inclined to share seats with Sena in Pune

first_imgDespite affirmations by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Sena contesting the State Assembly polls jointly, there is uncertainty over the proposed BJP-Sena alliance on account of a thorny seat-sharing arrangement in the eight Assembly segments in Pune city. The BJP had swept all seats in Pune in the 2014 Assembly elections when a rupture in alliances saw the two parties (as well as the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party) contesting the polls separately. Now, the BJP’s city unit is not disposed to let go of any of these segments in face of the Sena’s claims on at least three of them: Hadapsar, Shivajinagar and Kothrud.BJP city unit chief Madhuri Misal said since the party has eight sitting MLAs, there was no reason to let go of any of the seats. On Thursday, senior BJP leader and State Education Minister Ashish Shelar interviewed aspirants for the eight seats. In the wake of the party’s success in the Lok Sabha elections, 131 aspirants have come forward as potential candidates. The Kasba Assembly segment is set to get a new candidate as the sitting legislator, senior BJP leader Girish Bapat, was recently elected to the Lok Sabha. Among those eager for a ticket from Kasba Peth include Pune Mayor Mukta Tilak and Mr. Bapat’s daughter-in-law, Swarada. In the results of the 2014 Assembly polls, the Sena’s Mahadeo Babar was unseated by the BJP’s Yogesh Tilekar, while Chadrakant Mokate was routed by the BJP’s Medha Kulkarni in Kothrud. The Shivajinagar seat, once a Sena stronghold, has slipped from the party’s grasp even before the 2009 Assembly elections, with its former MLA Vinayak Nimhan switching alliances with the Congress before re-entering the Sena fold after the 2014 polls. While the BJP has commenced their poll preparations in the city on a war footing, the Sena’s leaders and cadre have yet to gear up for the challenge. However, some Sena leaders have said statements by local BJP leaders did not mean anything as the parties would be contesting jointly.“The opposition Congress-NCP is not even in the picture this time. It is a tussle for supremacy between the BJP and the Sena. The BJP’s internal survey shows they can win more than 160 of the 288 seats on their own. Any seat-sharing formula they present before the Sena will be based on these considerations. It is hardly likely they would be willing to give up seats with sitting MLAs, as in Pune city,” said a political analyst.last_img read more
